Stay Safe on Two Wheels: Essential Motorcycle Safety Tips for Summer Riding
It's that time of year again, and at FFUN Motorcycle Company, we know that means you're tuning up your Harley-Davidson for that first summer ride. Before you hit the road (or off-road, if it fits) for the first time, we've got some motorcycle safety tips to help you make the most of your time on the road.
Pre-Season Preparations for Motorcyclists
The first thing you need to do before you even pull your motorcycle out of hibernation is check to make sure that your bike has what it needs to function like the well-oiled machine it is supposed to be. Check your fluid levels—brake, oil, coolant—and top them off or change them as needed. Inspect the tires for cracks and check the air pressure to make sure they are in the right range for hot weather riding. Finally, check the drive system—whether chain, shaft or belt-driven—and repair/lubricate as necessary.
Test Drive Dynamics
Before you go on long open road rides, take a test drive around the block. This will allow you to check out how your bike functions on the road after sitting in the garage all winter. If you notice that your brakes are less responsive than you're comfortable with, get the brake pads or shoes replaced. Take a short night drive to ensure that your lights are working well. If they are burnt out or dimmed, replace them. Also, check for blind spots caused by misalignment of side mirrors.
Think Ahead and Play it Smart
Once you're confident that your motorcycle is at its peak, it's time to plan your first ride. But before you leave home for the open road, take a few minutes to check ahead. Spontaneous rides are fine if you're into that, but you should have a prep kit in case you run into foul weather or get lost in the middle of nowhere. Your prep kit should have water, sunscreen, a GPS phone (or a map, if you're going off-road or way out of civilization) and a snack to stave off low blood sugar.
Motorcycle Safety Tips for Safe Riding
Motorcycle riders are notorious for their bad-ass attitude, but smart bikers know when to drop that bravado to avoid motorcycle accidents. When you're on a ride, keep your eyes open for potholes or debris that could cause you to lose control of your bike. Adhere to the speed limits and wear appropriate protective gear. If you're planning a longer ride, a motorcycle helmet with a visor will serve as multi-layered protection against roadway hazards and overexposure to harmful UV rays.
